About our Center
The NKI Centre for Early Clinical Research is part of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the hospital and research institute specialising in cancer. We have extensive experience and specialist expertise in developing and conducting complex phase 1, phase 2 and first-in-human trials aimed at improving cancer treatment.
Our activities include translational research, investigator-initiated studies and industry-sponsored early clinical research. We conduct these studies in patients with various solid tumors, with the aim of developing personalized therapies, including targeted therapy, immunotherapy, antibody drug conjugates, combination therapies and cell therapy.
Our main focus areas are:
-
Precision medicine
The optimal dosage and formulation of precision medicines.
-
Early clinical trials based on genetic profiles
Therapies tailored to individual tumor biology.
-
Repurposing of medicines
New applications for existing medicines.
Multidisciplinary approach
Early clinical research and drug development require an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. Within our organization, we therefore facilitate close cooperation between, among others, the departments of Radiology, Hospital Pharmacy, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology and the general clinical laboratories. Thanks to our collaboration with all experts from all tumor working groups in house, we cover the entire patient population and have all the knowledge and expertise in-house.
In addition, we work closely with the research groups of the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), the research institute of the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI). This structural collaboration allows us to bundle expertise, organise research processes efficiently and guarantee quality and safety in every phase of the process.
Collaborating with the NKI Centre for Early Clinical Research means:
-
Experience and specialist expertise
As part of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the hospital and research institute specializing in cancer, we have years of experience and specialist expertise in developing and conducting complex phase 1, phase 2 and first-in-human studies, aimed at improving cancer treatment.
-
Close cooperation
We work closely with CROs and pharmaceutical companies, both locally and internationally, to collectively have maximum impact on the lives of cancer patients. Through clear agreements and a standardized working method, we realize reliable and constructive collaborations.
-
High quality standards
The NKI Centre for Early Clinical Research maintains high quality standards that comply with the applicable Dutch, European and FDA guidelines and regulations. In addition, our centre has its own pharmacy with GLP, GMP and GDP licences – a unique facility in Europe – which allows us to formulate and distribute medicines. This also allows us to perform pharmacological research such as mass balance studies, measurement of intracellular metabolites, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic modelling.
-
Access to a large patient population
The NKI Center for Early Clinical Research provides access to a significant patient population thanks to its referral center, the national patient referral networks, and access to molecular tumor profiling.
